According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Willow revival has found its director in I Am Not Okay With This’s Jonathan Entwhistle. The series is based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard from a story by George Lucas. The film starred Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer. Entwistle replaces Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu who left the project due to having a baby on the way.
Entwistle Had the following to say in a statement:
“With its epic world of swords, sorcery and adventure, Willow captivated and influenced so many. I’m excited to be going on this journey and working with Jon and Wendy to create something that is both deeply rooted in that original film and also a fresh, funny, and charming addition to the beloved story. To be able to play within the world so painstakingly crafted by Ron back in ’88 is a dream come true for me.”

Entwistle will direct the pilot as well as executive produce alongside Ron Howard, Kathleen Kennedy, and Jonathan Kasdan (who scripted the pilot). The series is said to focus on the rescue mission of a kidnapped prince. Warwick Davis will return as the Nelwyn sorcerer Willow Ufgood with newcomers Cailee Spaeny and Ellie Bamber. It’s been far too long since I’ve watched the original film. I can’t remember much of anything about it other than as a kid I really liked it.
Growing up in the 80s I am all for these revivals of beloved films in the form of streaming television series. There is a lot of great content from this era of cinema and a good deal of it is worth expanding. Willow is a fine example of such content.
Every decade seems to have its own sort of vibe as far as movies are concerned. But the films of the 1980s had something special. Something extra not found in the films of previous decades. I think it had a lot to do with the filmmaking process. Bigger budgets and better technology opened the possibilities of what kind of stories could be told.
