Wolfman Reboot Starring Ryan Gosling To Lock Down The Invisible Man Director

The Wolfman reboot will have a steady hand at the wheel.

Well, whaddya know? After the mammoth train wreck that was The Mummy, Universal had to take a step back to rethink their Dark Universe. Namely, they had to set it ablaze and push it out to sea. After that film, there was no going back to that big-budget blockbuster strategy. And that’s pretty much what they did. The ambitious monster-filled universe is all but abandoned, and Universal hired Jason Blum to produce a new movie for them.

This year’s The Invisible Man proved they were going in a new direction. The film was tense and terrifying — exactly what a modern horror movie should be. Rather than try to transform the franchise into an action story, it turned it into a different kind of horror one. The fact that Universal decided to turn back to Jason Blum for a Wolfman reboot proved that they had a winning combination.

Earlier this year, Ryan Gosling was attached to this movie, but a great director is key for this kind of job. So, I’m happy to report that Blumhouse will be returning to The Invisible Man helmer Leigh Whannell for this new story.

According to Deadline, he will also be writing the treatment for the movie. Given that he was the sole writer on The Invisible Man, I’m more than happy with this. Whannell clearly knows how to make a good, tense scary story — and more importantly, he knows how to update these characters for modern audiences. Of course, we have no idea if Wolfman will be set in the modern day, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it did.

Back around a decade ago, Universal tried to make Wolfman a period piece, and it just didn’t click with audiences. Hopefully, with Jason Blum and Leigh Whannell steering things, we can get something really special here.

How do you feel about Whannell taking on Wolfman? Does it give you any more faith in the movie’s direction? Sound off down below!
