Why Wolverine’s Role Was Reduced in ‘X-MEN: APOCALYPSE’

SPOILER WARNING: While I think it goes without saying that this post will contain spoilers for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, I think it’s still worth saying…this post will contain spoilers for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. So if you’ve come into this article hoping I’ll somehow be able to write around the plot of the film, then you’re sorely mistaken.

Wolverine’s appearance in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE wasn’t much of a surprise. The character making cameos in every X-MEN film is something of a tradition, and what’s more, the filmmakers have been teasing this particular appearance for some time now. In the film, Scott Summers, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler stumble across the clawed mutant while sneaking through William Stryker’s Weapon X facility, and unleash him on the unsuspecting baddies.

It probably doesn’t surprise you that this wasn’t Wolverine’s role in the original script. Films change drastically over the course of development, and there are usually several drafts between the first and shooting scripts. This isn’t necessarily news. We reported on this a few weeks back, in fact. From what we know, there were drafts where Wolverine was something of a drill sergeant for the X-Men.

What is new is the explanation for the change. Why the change? According to CinemaBlend, his increased rolewould’ve taken the spotlight away from Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, who is the franchise’s hot star at the moment. All in all, I’d say it was the right choice, even if it was for the wrong reason. Given that Hugh Jackman’s time with the franchise is almost up, it’s important that the series learn to stand on its own without Wolverine, and his reduced role ensured they wouldn’t rely too heavily on Jackman’s involvement.

Is this one of the reasons why the film seems to have had a rather disappointing first weekend at the box office? That question is harder to say, as there are many factors, including the saturation of the superhero genre at the box office.

What do you think of Fox’s decision to reduce Wolverine’s role in the film? Was it a good move, or did it simply result in a smaller box office haul? Let us know your thoughts down below!
