According to The GWW, a World War Hulk movie is in active development over at Marvel Studios. The first Hulk solo movie since The Incredible Hulk is set to go into production sometime in late, 2022. The outlet does point out that the title being used currently is World War Hulk. However, that does not necessarily mean an adaptation of the classic Marvel comic books storyline. It seems likely that if a Hulk solo movie is on the way, the events of the upcoming She-Hulk Disney+ show may be the catalyst that sets up the movie. After all, Bruce Banner/Hulk will appear in She-Hulk, along with some Hulk villains.

Now, I’m sure if you have followed the MCU, you are aware of why there has been no Hulk movie since The Incredible Hulk. The rights to a Hulk solo movie are complicated because distribution rights sat with Universal and not Disney. This is why Hulk appeared in so many ensemble movies, but never a solo film. The outlet assumes that if their sources are giving them correct information, that these rights issues must have been resolved? Some fans are wondering whether some kind of deadline has passed recently which reverts the rights to Disney? Others have pondered whether Disney and Universal came to some sort of arrangement about these rights?

As for the comic book, the events that are the catalyst for that story have already been changed in the MCU. Hulk was in Sakaar, but none of the other events from ‘Planet Hulk’ took place. In fact some of Hulk’s story in that comic went to Thor in Ragnarok. It therefore seems unlikely that this movie would be about Hulk returning to Earth and turning it into a battle world with him as a despot. I just can’t see that flying in this MCU.

However, what about a story not dissimilar to the ‘Gamma World’ plot for an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In that story The Leader starts a Gamma device which Hulk’s out anyone within it’s vicinity so that only certain Avengers like Hulk and Thor are immune. Given we have Abomination back, plus She-Hulk coming and rumors The Leader will return also. it would actually be a cool way to provide a huge climax to events set up in the She-Hulk show.

I guess we shall have to wait to see if this pans out. Then, likely we will have to wait for She-Hulk to work out where this movie could be headed.
