Marvel Animation is bringing the mutants back this summer. The acclaimed animated series X-Men ’97 will officially return to Disney+ for its highly anticipated second season on July 1, continuing the story that reignited fan passion for the iconic superhero team.
Following the breakout success of its debut season, X-Men ’97 quickly became one of Disney+’s most-watched original animated series based on global streaming hours. The revival also earned widespread critical praise, currently holding a near-perfect 99% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 2 picks up after the dramatic events of the first season, with the X-Men fractured and scattered across multiple points in time. As the team struggles to find its way back home, the world they left behind in the 1990s faces mounting tensions. New threats emerge alongside growing anti-mutant sentiment, setting the stage for another emotionally charged and action-packed chapter in the beloved franchise.
The new season will consist of nine episodes and once again features a voice cast packed with returning talent. Ross Marquand voices Professor X, while Matthew Waterson returns as Magneto. Ray Chase reprises Cyclops alongside Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.

Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum leads the production team alongside Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo. Jake Castorena serves as supervising producer.
Writing duties for the upcoming season are shared by JB Ballard, Beau DeMayo, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson, while Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley direct the episodes.

Originally inspired by the groundbreaking 1990s animated series X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 successfully blended nostalgia with modern storytelling in its first season, delivering emotionally resonant arcs and comic-accurate adaptations that resonated with longtime fans and newcomers alike.

With the mutants now lost across time and tensions rising back on Earth, Season 2 appears poised to expand the show’s ambitious storytelling even further when it premieres this July on Disney+.
