Xbox Series X Name Explained (Sort Of)

Like many gamers out there, when I heard the name Xbox Series X, I responded with an audible, “huh?” I had flashbacks to the Wii U era, where I figured mainstream audiences would be confused. Was this going to be some sort of spinoff console to the Xbox One? Is it related to the Xbox One X? Of course, I knew this wasn’t the case, but I knew the name would cause a bit of confusion for Welo and Wela come holiday season 2020 while doing Christmas shopping.

Why did they go with this name? What does this all mean? Well, a Microsoft rep spoke with Business Insider and tried their best to clarify the situation…but I’m not sure they did much of anything.

“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” the Microsoft representative said. “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”

Okay, so what does this mean? Upon first inspection, it sounds like pretty much what we already knew: that Xbox is the main banner and that all other names will be added to the end of that going forward.  But what about the “Series X” part?

“Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations,” the rep continued, “the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future.”

Okay, so we’re assuming, down the line, there will be Xbox Series S, Xbox Series Z, or as many different console generations they think they can get away with. Like many, I’m just annoyed with how long it takes to same the damn name.

Straight-up, I think it’s a bad name. Just how Xbox One was a bad name. I guarantee down the line, there will be confusion, especially when they start having a proverbial alphabet soup of releases in the “Xbox Series.” That being said, a name is a name. Like the actual physical appearance, it really doesn’t matter so long as it plays well and has great games.
