Star Wars: The Skywalkers Aren’t Done After Episode IX?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marks the end of the Skywalker Saga. This is what has been marketed to us from the very beginning. Decades of storytelling will effectively come to an end, and with it, presumably, allow the franchise to move away from the family name that’s characterized it from the very beginning. But is that what’s happening here? Well, maybe not.

While at the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker world premiere, Kathleen Kennedy took a moment to clarify what this movie actually means for the franchise going forward.

“We’re not finishing the Skywalkers, necessarily,” Kennedy said. “They can always, in one way or another, reappear.”

This response isn’t surprising. I do think this movie will see the end of the “Skywalker Saga,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean the story of the lineage comes to an end. The characters will still move on within the universe, and they’ll still presumably have adventures and offspring that can very well pop up in future movies, even if they aren’t the focus.

Like any good marketer, Kennedy is keeping the doors open for the future. You never want to look back and say, “welp, I should have left that door a bit more ajar than I did,” especially when there are billions of dollars on the line.
