The XFL announced yesterday that plans are in place to relaunch the spring football league in 2023. The announcement came after both the XFL and CFL tabled talks of a collaborative partnership had been tabled.
The CFL is moving forward with its upcoming season later this year after the league had to cancel its season last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While details of the meetings were not widely shared, speculation was that both leagues would form an international league. Something that the NFL has been working on for years hosting games in Mexico and England.
The announcement that the XFL would be returning in 2023 was a change from its original relaunch date of 2022.
“While our discussions with the CFL did not ultimately lead to a collaboration, the effort reinforced our belief and commitment to developing the XFL for international spring football. We look forward to seeing everyone for kickoff in spring of 2023,” the league said to Ben Fischer who reports for the Sports Business Journal.

While this news may seem disappointing for fans it is not really surprising. With the CFL getting ready for its upcoming season in the next month it would have taken a miracle for both leagues to get a partnership together along with getting their own seasons ready.
The next year will allow the XFL to secure locations to host teams that will have proper facilities. Along with locations the league will need to hire new coaches and draft players for the league. With the recent news that collegiate athletes can now secure sponsorships, it will be interesting to see how the XFL uses this new rule to its advantage.
The XFL was sold from Vince McMahon to Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, and Redbird Captial Partners after the league had to suspend operations due to the pandemic.
