Poor ol’ Logan hasn’t even been dead for too long and there is still non-stop discussion about bringing him back to life. Of course, Fox famously utilized the character of Wolverine about as much as anyone could have used any character (with him taking the lead in films he had no business leading, even), and with the X-Men heading over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, talk of a new version of him are starting to emerge.
These talks were brought up while at the TV Critics Association press tour, where long-time X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner was present. While speaking during the Legion panel, she was asked about the future of Wolverine in the MCU, and she says she believes that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige would have to look for someone to replace Hugh Jackman.
“Yes, because Hugh, just the physicality of it all, just to bulk up. This man worked so hard to bulk up, would get up at four in the morning to bulk and eat protein meals every two hours because his natural state, they used to call him Worm when he was a kid. So his natural state is a very skinny guy. Once you reach a certain age, the body just won’t go anymore. I think he was wise to say, ‘I’m at that point. I can’t do it.’ Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t come back as older Wolverine. You never know. Future Wolverine, you never know.”

So, it’s worth mentioning that Donner doesn’t say for sure that Feige will actually be utilizing the character of Wolverine, and even goes as far as to say:
“I don’t know what Kevin’s thinking honestly. I don’t even think Kevin knows. I think Kevin’s still dealing with this wealth of characters and trying to make sense of them.”
So I wouldn’t expect Wolverine to show up any time soon…in case that’s what you were hoping for. While it’s sad, I think this is something we all knew was inevitable. As tough as it’ll be to let him go, as history has proven, so long as they get someone else who’s great in their own right, we’ll be plenty forgiving.
