Anime director Makoto Shinkai has had a meteoric rise into the mainstream. His last film, Your Name, managed to pull in an astounding $358 million worldwide, and for a film from Japan, that’s damn impressive. As someone who’s been following his career ever since his own handcrafted short Voices of a Distant Stars hit DVD shelves stateside, it’s great to see a unique voice like his find success — especially given that Your Name was easily his best project to date.
So, I’ve had my eyes on what would come next for this guy, and as it turns out, a film called Weathering With You is next on his docket. Now, the official Twitter account has released a gorgeous new poster for the movie, which shows off the trademark gloss and polish we’ve come to expect from Shinkai.
In addition to the poster, we have a cool trailer for the film, which is really just a showcase for the animation for those of us who can’t actually speak Japanese. But, as a nice supplement to the trailer, you can also take a look at the synopsis from the American distributor, GKIDS.
“The summer of his high school freshman year, Hokoda runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hokoda meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strongwilled girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…”
Sounds like an interesting little premise to me. I know I’ll at least be giving it a shot, but what about you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
