The powerhouse video-sharing site YouTube may be one of the best inventions since sliced bread, but its influence may be a double edge sword in cultural society. Director Alex Winter looks into the societal consequences of YouTube on the world in his documentary YouTube Effect which has a stranglehold on what we believe in today.

The feature documentary takes viewers on a timely and gripping journey inside the cloistered world of YouTube and its parent company Google; investigating YouTube’s rise from humble beginnings in the attic of a pizzeria to its explosion onto the world stage, becoming the largest media platform in history and sparking a cultural revolution, while creating massive controversy in the age of disinformation. In the fourth quarter of 2021 alone, YouTube brought in 8.6 billion dollars in advertising revenue, a 25% increase in its year-to-year results. While traditional media is struggling, YouTube is thriving.
The feature doc is thrilling, shocking, and hilarious, but always highly compelling, and above all, entertaining. YouTube is a world populated by some of the most brilliant minds in tech, business, media, and politics, as well as pranksters, trolls, and conspiracy theorists. The YouTube Effect gives viewers exclusive access to all the key players.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with documentary director Alex Winters on The YouTube Effect as it was showcased during this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Alex Winter is an actor and filmmaker. He is best known for playing the slacker Bill in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures, along with its sequels Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and Bill & Ted Face the Music. Also, he is known for his role as Marko in the 1987 film The Lost Boys. On the directing side, he started off with narrative films such as 1993’s Freaked and Fever. He transitioned into documentaries in the 2010s with Downloaded, Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and the Silk Road, The Panama Papers, and even the musical doc Zappa.
YouTube Effect made its premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
