Top Cow’s Port of Earth #2 by Zack Kaplan is out this week and it beings by looking back at the deal that was made with the Consortium to open a port on Earth on exchange for technology. A reporter asks, who got the best deal? Back in the first issue we learned that the Consortium was not a diplomatic alien group at all, but more of a fuel company opening stops all around the Galaxy, not interested in the well being of the people of earth but their bottom line. Or the fact that their technology had put a lot of people out of work. Not to mention the ever increasing incidents of aliens leaving the port which resulted in the death of thousands of people.
Now the second issue, gives us a look at the board that was put together to represent the interests of Earth. Unfortunately this was made up of people from corporations like Chevron, Tesla and Boeing. Giving us the idea that just like the Consortium, this group also only cared about their pockets. It is noted that human rights groups were not allowed to participate in any negotiations. Kaplan does a great job setting up a ticking time bomb, as it would seem that it is only a matter of time before the “deal” falls apart.
Also in the issue we continue to follow the two ESA security agents Rice and McIntrye who are on the trail of a rouge alien. Tensions are high as one of the agents personal feelings about the deal with the Consortium seem to be clouding he judgement, which could lead into him breaking protocol. Coincidentally, this all happens on the day that the Consortium and the ESA are set to meet.
After two issues, we now have a good understanding of what a mess Earth has gotten themselves into. Kaplan has set up this world that is now in the hands of corporations. What is going to happen if and when everything goes south? Will they just wash their hands of the situation and back off into the shadows, leaving the Earth in shambles? This is a solid issue with artwork by Andrea Mutti and colors by Vladimir Popov.
