Zack Snyder Explains Significance of Superman’s Black Suit In JL Synder-Cut

We are getting closer to the anticipated Synder-Cut Justice League release. He was recently on an episode of ComicBookDebate. Synder reveals a good deal of interesting information. For instance, he only shot a few new scenes. However, he also said that around 80% of his original did not make the theatrical release. That means there will be a good deal that is new to us fans! Another interesting part he discusses involves the significance of Superman’s black suit.

Snyder On Superman’s Black Suit

We have seen the black suit teased, and even knew it was to make an appearance in JL at one point. Unfortunately, we never got what many of us wanted in the theatrical release. If you go to the 23:30 minute mark, Snyder elaborates on the significance of Superman’s black suit.

Superman has always been the center-piece for Snyder’s story arc. So the black suit is more than an homage to the comics. He stresses that Superman is often seen as unchanging. He wanted to show the growth of his character. In this way it can take a character of mythological nature, and give them some relatability. Superman’s black suit is paramount to the growth of the character. It leads to the experienced/classic Superman we all know and love.

Also, from a technical stance, Superman’s black suit represents a “time delineator” as he puts it. Whether it is used for flashbacks/forwards in the future, the audience knows exactly what is happening in Superman’s character arc based on the black suit. The black suit is a culminating step in defining the transformation back to the red and blue suit.

What We Have Been Waiting For

This is actually one of the parts of the Snyder-Cut that I am looking forward to the most. I have always wanted to see Superman’s black suit on the big screen. Disappointing is an understatement for how I felt after so much teasing of the suit. Personally, I was hoping for Superman in the black suit to be a primary antagonist for Justice League in the film. A possible storyline having Darkseid or Steppenwolf try to recruit Superman and the JL working to win him back could have been epic. Unfortunately, all we got is a quick scene of Superman with his shirt off with the team quickly bringing in Lois. Seemed rushed and anticlimactic.

Even if they did not go that route, using the black suit has numerous possibilities. I do like Snyder speaking on how it not only gives the audience a specific moment in time, but also provides the growth of character.
