Why Zack Snyder Decided To Kill Jimmy Olsen In Batman V Superman

In the past day, we have gotten a lot of information about different scenes in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. This is thanks to a live watch-along that was hosted by Snyder via Vero. This film was the second one in the DCEU and introduced Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne aka Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

One of the topics that were almost immediately touched upon was the fate of Jimmy Olsen, played by Michael Cassidy. At the beginning of the film he is seen working as a photojournalist. He is accompanying Amy Adam’s Lois Lane to interview a war criminal in Africa. But it turns out Olsen is a CIA operative undercover. Unfortunately he is discovered and executed in front of Lois.

So why did Snyder decide to kill off a beloved classic Superman character? Here is what he commented via comicbook.com:
“I just liked the idea that Jimmy was a spook for the CIA. I always felt like Jimmy, you know, never was capable, that capable, and to see him be like speak a foreign language,” Snyder said. “People always ask me if he’s dead, do we see him again, does he come back to life. I don’t think so. It implies a bigger universe. It implies that these dominos are falling as we go forward.”

This is not the first time that Snyder has talked about Olsen’s fate in the film. When the film was released he didn’t feel like there was enough room in his universe for Olsen. But he wanted to include him anyway and “have fun with him”.

Thinking about the direction that Snyder was trying to take, Jimmy’s quick exit may have been a good idea. The death of such a well-known character so soon could have been done to send audiences a message. One that lets everyone know that this journey is going to have serious and deadly consequences.
