With so many super heroes invading The CW, it’s going to be tough for a new one to come in and stand out from the rest. That is exactly what Black Lightning is going to try and accomplish this when it premieres in 2018. For now the idea is that it will stand alone apart from the rest of the super hero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl). I personally think that it is only a matter of time before he is included with the other heroes. But this piece isn’t focusing on any alliances he could make rather his opponents. Thanks to the trailer and synopsis we know that he will be dealing with a gang that called “The 100”.
With that gang playing a key role in the series, it was only a matter of time before their leader was announced as the main antagonist. The International Business Times has reported that at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, co-showrunners Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil have revealed that the leader and main antagonist to the show to be Tobias Whale. But what will separate him from the villains that we have seen on the other shows is that Akil is looking forward to exploring backstories to not only Black Lightning but Tobias Whale, instead of the typical villain of the week approach that the other shows have. Akil made this comment,
“It’s a character driven show. I don’t know if there’s going to be a fight every week,†Akil said. “There’s certainly not going to be a villain of the week. I don’t want to do that. We really
want to explore the characters, even the villains. I think one of the most interesting characters right now from a storytelling standpoint is Tobias. Because we’re not having him sort of twist
his mustache. His hatred for himself and for others comes from a real place, so we want to know why he’s like that.â€
Marvel’s Netflix series of shows have done a great job at doing this, really investing time into developing now only their heroes but their villains. So hearing comments like this from Akil really gets meexcited to see what this show has to offer. As far as Tobias Whale, he was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. He made his comic book debut in 1977 in DC Comic’s Black Lightning #1 and became a long time nemesis to Black Lightning.
I don’t know much about any of the characters on this show, but I look forward to learning about them in the months to come. It will be interesting to see how similar or different Black Lightning is from the rest of the CW heroes shows and if fans will tune in like they do for the other shows. Are you looking forward to Black Lightning?
