Zootopia Directors Helming Brazil-Set Animated Disney Musical Encanto

Encanto will be Disney’s new animated film.

Disney Animation Studios really is having quite the street. While I’m not a fan of Frozen II, but almost everything else this past decade from them is golden. Among all the gold was Zootopia. It was an unexpected gem that featured a surprisingly mature subtext that tackled racism. And that was on top of it being a genuinely great mystery story. With the film working on two levels, it’s gone on to be one of my favorite Disney films of all-time. So, given the news that directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush are now re-teaming with Disney, I couldn’t help but be happy about it.

This latest news comes from TheDisinsider. According to them, the story will be set in Brazil and will follow a family with magical powers. Unfortunately, the lead character, a young girl, does not have any magical abilities to speak of. For now, the film’s tentative title is Encanto, which translates to “charm”. However, keep in mind that this could change, as tentative titles often do.

Onboard to write the music is Disney favorite Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is well known for his work on Hamilton, but he also worked on the fantastic music for Moana. And speaking of Moana, it’s worth noting is that this film was originally rumored to be set in the same world. The outlet states this is not the case.

While this isn’t confirmed, the outlet speculates this film could fit into the November 24, 2021 slot — though you never know. Given how little we know about it, I’d actually be surprised if we’d be getting it that early, but I’m honestly no animation industry expert. While I don’t think it’s common for animation projects to be kept under wraps until this late in the game, I could be wrong.

Regardless, I am enjoying this trend for Disney. Moana saw the studio working with a female of color as a Disney Princess, and the upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon seems to be doing the same. Encanto would be the third movie in about five years, and I think that’s pretty awesome. I’m all for getting the extra representation out there, and Brazil is certainly a setting you don’t see too often in American animation.
