For fans of the Indiana Jones franchise, the last film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was met with heavy criticism. Besides the fact that folks didn’t care too much for the aliens in the film, another aspect that annoyed fans was Shia Labeouf’s Mutt Williams. The character was revealed to be the son of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood, but he never seemed to really fit into the franchise, and left most fans bitter. Screenwriter of the yet-untitled fifth Indiana Jones installment, David Koepp, gave fans some relief while speaking with Entertainment Weekly.

“Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say…  and the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film. We’re plugging away at it. In terms of when we would start, I think that’s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford… I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post… If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.”

I for one, am glad to know we will get at least one more adventure with Harrison Ford as the famed archeologist. While I didn’t hate Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as much as most, it is my least favorite in the series of films. And I want to see Ford go out on a higher note than we were left with in 2008.  Many fans didn’t take well to the extraterrestrial nature of the film, I had more of an issue with the film’s execution than with the concept.

It seems that Indy is at his best when searching for a Biblical artifact, perhaps this is an avenue they filmmakers should revisit. I wouldn’t mind seeing Indy travel through time either, if done correctly I think it could work. My Indy order goes Raiders/Crusade in a tie, Temple of Doom and then Crystal Skull.

To be fair…how many of the issues with Mutt were the script/story itself vs Shia? I would have preferred they brought in the son similar to the Connery role. Distant son he has issues with, but working together to find his mom or some treasure; maybe even have him kidnapped case of expertise. Is that a retread? Yeah, but better than what they did.

Indian Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was a great game to play many years ago, perhaps that could be the next film. Where he meets Aquaman, joins the DC world and ultimately becomes leader of the Justice League perhaps…
