The Dark Universe from Universal was quite the non-starter. They may have had the mammoth budget as well as stars like Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Johnny Depp attached to help shepherd forward a world of monsters, but unfortunately, that first movie was just too damn awful to pull any excitement from audiences. It had all the potential in the world, and it just sort of sputtered to a halt.
We all know the real problem: They’d lost sight of what made their monsters iconic. It wasn’t the $150 million budget. It wasn’t the promise of action. It was the chills and thrills brought about by implication. One studio who understands this full well is Blumhouse — whose strategy has turned them into one of the best horror production houses in Hollywood. Blumhouse Productions is spearheading The Invisible Man, which is coming from Upgrade‘s Leigh Whannell.

Now, it looks like they have a pretty solid cast member officially on board in Elizabeth Moss. Moss is very much known for her work on Mad Men, but she also has been making a splash more recently with the Hulu original series The Handmaid’s Tale. While the character of this film is iconic, what makes this stand out from the failed Dark Universe is that this is a standalone experience not intended to usher in a whole world. First and foremost, they are working to make sure the movie is good…and that’s just so refreshing in today’s age.
