Detective Pikachu Director Reacts To Sonic The Hedgehog Backlash

I don’t know who is to blame for the design of the title character in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film. You would think members of the game’s design teams, fans of the games working on the film, or even an intern that caught a glimpse of the design would have pointed out how WRONG this thing looked. SEGA themselves should have raised red flags when getting a look at the earliest of designs for their flagship character, but apparently, no one had the guts to tell the filmmakers that this design was… horrible. I feel very bad for the animators who poured their best efforts into creating this character. They spent countless hours animating individual electrified hairs, lighting reflections in the eyes, and creating a wet looking nose. All that work to then be told the whole thing needs to be redesigned and reanimated before the film is released. That had to be heartbreaking.

The Verge was able to ask Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman about his take on the situation. His opinion would be incredibly valid given that he is also bringing a live-action take on a successful videogame franchise. This is what he had to say:

“There’s no right or wrong to how you make one of these movies. It would be very difficult for us to redesign anything. We spent a year designing all the characters ahead of shooting so that we could get it all right. If we were off by an inch on Pikachu, [actor] Justice Smith’s performance would go right out the window. For us, it would have been impossible — but that doesn’t mean they can’t do it. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes — they’re in a difficult spot.”

I agree. They may be able to change the design of Sonic’s face and body a little bit, but his dimensions will need to be mostly unchanged to keep the line of sight right for all of the live actors. If I am the filmmakers, I would be asking for a delay in release. I would want my design and animation to be perfect because this movie already has an uphill battle. No one should be rushing this thing.
