“Somehow, Palpatine returned,” is all that it took for the seeds of doubt to be sown in my heart. I’d been a big cheerleader of the Star Wars sequel trilogy up until that point. Even when it was revealed that Palpatine would be returning, I hoped that there’d be a damn good reason behind that stupid reveal. I didn’t like the idea of Palpatine coming back, but I’d mostly been pleased with what Disney has offered from their Star Wars movies, so the odds were in their favor in my eyes.

But Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came along, and there was no explanation apart from that one line from Poe. It was annoying, distracting, and terrible. How could something so nonsensical as this happen without explanation? Well, luckily for me, this was an explanation that was saved for the novelization of the film. Unluckily for me, the explanation SUCKS.

Here is the explanation for how Palpatine survived getting tossed down the shaft in the Death Star mere minutes before the Death Star itself exploded into space dust.

“Plagueis had not acted fast enough in his own moment of death. But Sidious, sensing the flickering light in his apprentice, had been ready for years. So the falling, dying Emperor called on all the dark power of the Force to thrust his consciousness far, far away, to a secret place he had been preparing. His body was dead, an empty vessel, long before it found the bottom of the shaft, and his mind jolted to a new awareness in a new body – a painful one, a temporary one.”

So, yeah. That’s the explanation. And I can sum up my own reaction in one short sentence: “Oh, my god, get f**ked, Star Wars.” What an insultingly silly explanation this is. I mean, I get it. Star Wars has never been the staple of totally sensical logic — it is space fantasy, after all. However, in doing this, they seemingly break potential deaths in the future.

For all we know, Count Dooku spirited out of his body before dying. Heck, let’s not stop there. That youngling Anakin killed? He also spirited out of his body. Same as Han Solo, and that “vision” of him in The Rise of Skywalker was actually flesh and blood — he just learned how to apparate.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Expanded Universe expert. For all I know, there is plenty out there that hints at this ability. But man is it silly.
