Becky Riordan has a Percy Jackson Disney+ series update.
Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series was one of those that was a casualty of the Y.A. craze. In the midst of films like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, Hollywood was eager to adapt fantasy and sci-fi books geared at a younger audience. While it skewed a bit younger, Percy Jackson seemed like the perfect candidate. And so Hollywood took its story, aged it up, and turned it into a short-lived, mediocre film franchise.
Author Rick Riordan has vocally expressed his displeasure with the films and has since pushed for a Disney+ series. Last May, it was confirmed that these talks evolved into an actual show. However, like all shows, it’ll take a while before it becomes a reality. But that’s not to say they have no update. Becky Riordan recently took to Twitter to give viewers an update on the series.
“Any news to share?” she wrote. “A couple of studio meetings this week. Getting close to wrapping up the pilot outline. A script outline isn’t the same as an outline for a term paper but is more a script without dialog if that makes sense. We are having a blast! We love our team! More soon.”

While this is great hear, it’s an indication of how early on things are. They will likely have eight to 10 episodes for the first season. With that in mind, there are still all of those outlines and scripts to be written before they can lock down cast members and dig into preproduction. In other words, I don’t expect we’ll be seeing anything of the Percy Jackson series for a couple of years.
That being said, any progress is progress, and given the involvement Rick Riordan has in the story, we know it’ll be more faithful than those films were. More than anything, I think this series has the potential to succeed where Disney has failed recently. With films like A Wrinkle in Time and Artemis Fowl, they’ve made it clear they don’t know how to adapt children’s literature. Perhaps Percy Jackson can be a great learning experience for them.
