Batwoman Season 2 cast discusses their new dynamic! Read on for more details.
It’s not uncommon for actors to flow in and out of TV shows. There’s something very natural about a cast shifting about season to season. CW shows, particularly ones set in the Arrowverse, are a bit of a different animal. The herocentric shows establish the main character and build a set of support characters around them and that core group tends to stick together for quite a while.
When Ruby Rose departed Batwoman after the inaugural season of the show, it left the creative team with a bit of a conundrum with what to do with Kate Kane and how to succeed her on the show. For their sophomore season, the cast regarded the challenge as an opportunity.
Heroes and Villains
Speaking during a roundtable, the cast discussed adjusting to the new dynamic. Nicole Kang (Mary Hamilton) and Rachel Skarsten (Alice) discussed it from two different angles. For Kang, the excitement of a new Batwoman is that the audience and ancillary characters know the history between each other, but Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) does not. That journey of discovery is an exciting one.
“Just to the new dynamic of the show, I personally had so much fun. I don’t think it’s very often, you know, in a season 2 where it feels almost like a limited series, where it’s a new thing. We’re really lucky because our audience has the history of all of the ancillary characters, so as the audience learns who Javicia and Ryan Wilder are, who she is, we get to take the time and get to know her and see her in the room with all of the people who you know where they’re coming from who what happened to them.”

On the flip side of that dynamic, Rachel Skarsten has played a Villain, Alice, singularly obsessed with Kate Kane. So the question of how to flip the dynamic with a new Batwoman presented a unique challenge to the crew.
“We don’t really have a lot of interaction in the beginning and Ryan has a very specific vendetta against Alice, but Alice, I don’t think has any real memory or recollection of that event, at least when you meet them in the show, at that specific time. As we go on in the show, I was actually very impressed by how the writers intertwined our stories, which I think presented them with a particular challenge with Alice, because up until now, the only thing that she is cared about was Kate Kane. So how do you kind of change that trajectory, but they’ve done it quite nicely and we’ve had the opportunity to start to work together and it’s been really fun.”
Going forward, it’ll be interesting to see how the writers have tied Alice and Wilder together. When she auditioned for the role, Skarsten was only told that she was a “female joker”. So if you know anything about his level of obsession towards Batman, seeing how they pit Alice against Wilder as the show goes on should be interesting.
A Peek into the Future
All told, the cast seems to be having a blast this season. Other tidbits about their hopes and desires? Javicia would love to see Catwoman on the show as both a villain and a love interest for Batwoman/Wilder. The femme fatale aspect of that relationship could certainly be fun to explore.
Lastly, Camrus Johnson, who plays Luke Fox, would love the opportunity to play Batwing at some point on the show. For those hoping it would happen sooner, rather than later, you’ll have to wait, as it hasn’t been discussed. Still, Camrus’s love for Static Shock fuels his desire as a black nerd and actor to play the hero his character becomes.
