‘Tweaked’ Superman Suit & ‘Gladiator’ Wonder Woman?

Wonder WomanCostume designer Michael Wilkinson (American Hustle) chatted with TheWrap on the red carpet this weekend about his work on Batman vs Superman. Makes sense that he’d want to tackle that subject since he is, after all, the man tasked with costuming the iconic characters Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman in their cinematic incarnations for the foreseeable future.

Of note, while the bulk of interview centers on his ideas for the Wonder Woman suit, Wilkinson did volunteer that he’s “tweaking the Superman suit.” Should be interesting to see how the suit will evolve. Could it just be a simple color alteration, like we saw between Sam Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films? Or will it be more like the subtle- yet classic- overhaul we’re seeing happen between Marc Webb’s first two Spider-Man movies? Could the red briefs be coming back? Who knows? All we do know is that we can no longer expect to see the same suit we saw last summer.

Wonder Woman

On the subject of Wonder Woman, Wilkinson shed some light on how the character’s warrior roots will definitely factor in. “I mean, you just have to look at the gladiators from ancient Rome; they did their thing in little loincloths, and a spear and a shield,” he said. Wilkinson continued, “It works for Thor, it works for 300 – so let’s see what happens.

In all, Wilkinson seems to find the prospect of outfitting Wonder Woman rather daunting. “It’s so thrilling, and slightly scary a prospect, of course. It’s so important to get her right, said Wilkinson. “She really deserves to be presented on screen in her full glory.” On his process and inspirations, Wilkinson said that he and his team took special care to research how she’s been presented in all of her incarnations, and across all mediums. He also stated, though, that it was important to “put that aside and and work out what is right for our film- for the cinematic universe that our director, Zack Snyder, is putting together.

I wonder what he thinks of the Adrianne Palicki edition of the costume that was going to be worn in the aborted NBC TV version of Wonder Woman? What do you think of his comments? Sound off!
