Hollywood Creative Alliance, formerly the Hollywood Critics Association, starts a new chapter with its inaugural 2024 Astra Awards.
The organization held the award ceremony honoring films, television, and craft with the Hollywood Critics Association. With the name change or re-organization, the HCA looks at a new, fresh start for its members and the industry.
The 2024 Astra Film Awards was revealed on the official HCA YouTube Channel. HCA vice chair Yong Chavez, head of member engagement Jeandra LeBeauf, and secretary Morgan Rojas presented the nomination video reveal. Also, Ms. Marvel star Anjali Bhimani and Melora Hardin from Golden Vanity participated in the nomination video.
It was revealed that Jimmy O. Yang will host the 2024 Astra Film Awards event on Saturday, January, beginning at 6:30 p.m. PDT, at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The Astra Creative Arts Awards winners will be revealed at the City Market Social House in Los Angeles on Monday, February 26, 2024.
Warner Brothers took the lead in nominations, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie earning fifteen nominations. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was just behind with fourteen nominations. The two films dominated the summer box office in the “Barbenheimer” event, earning over $2 billion worldwide.
On the individual side, Barbie actors Margo Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrara received nods, while Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. also got nominations for Oppenheimer.
Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got ten nominations, including Best Animated Feature, while also earned nominations for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay with Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld, and Shameik Moore earned nods for their roles.
Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon also received ten nominations, including Best Picture Director and Adapted Screenplay, with Lily Gladstone earning the nod for Best Actress.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things and Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers gained nine nominations each.
Rounding the rest of the nominations, films that earned more than five nods also included Ben Affleck’s Air, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, Blitz Bazawule’s The Color Purple, Celine Song’s Past Lives, Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4, and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall.
