24 Legal Thriller Spin-Off To Take Place The Day Before An Execution

24 seems to be one of those TV franchises that its producers won’t let die. Several months back, we heard news that they were developing a spin-off series that would take the ticking-clock format and set it to a legal thriller story. Additionally, earlier this week, there was talk of a prequel series that would follow a young Jack Bauer — but that’s not what we’re here to talk about. Let’s get our attention back to that legal thriller.

One of the major criticisms I’ve seen of that concept is the fact that, despite what we see on TV, being a lawyer isn’t really all that fast-paced and sexy. How could they really apply this ticking clock format in a setting like this without it being laughably inaccurate? While I’m not sure this will keep it from being inaccurate, we at least have some idea of what the overall approach will be.

Thanks to some words from Fox TV Group Chairman and CEO Gary Newman, we now have some ideas of what we can expect from it.

“The idea of moving that franchise from terrorism and security into the legal world is actually something we talked about probably as far back as season three or four when there would be discussions of spin-offs. You have to look for an arena where the stakes are high and time maters. That deals with an execution of a prisoner and there’s just 24 hours left when the execution is supposed to take place. It potentially carries a lot of the same values you would have in the old 24. There are real emotional stakes involved.”

Okay, so this doesn’t actually sound half bad. Rather than trying to have it take place at some random points during the case, it’s all taking place near the end when every detail is crucial. But can it be enough to actually carry a show? That is a question for another day.
