3 Body Problem Showrunners Reveal They Poached Liam Cunningham From Another Job To Play Wade

Here is a small 3 Body Problem FAQ with No SPOILERS , because I think it is needed.

3 Body Problem showrunners Benioff and Weiss reveal they had to poach Liam Cunningham from another job to play Wade in the series. Cunningham of course had worked with Benioff and Weiss for many years prior on Game of Thrones. In that show he played Ser Davos, The Onion Knight for multiple seasons.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast the writer/producers talked about casting both Cunningham and fellow Game of Thrones veteran John Bradley. However, when it came to deciding Cunningham was their man for Wade, they reveal they had an issue. Cunningham already had another job. Benioff and Weiss advised him to quit that job (unknown) and join this series. The rest as they say, is history.

“John [Bradley] definitely was,” Weiss explained when asked if they had any of the Game of Thrones actors in mind when developing 3 Body Problem. “The character was written to be kind of like a version of John. I’m trying to think. Some of the other actors, we always are looking for excuses to work with people from our family and that it just needs to be the right fit.”

“So as we wrote the show, and Wade in the books is very different from Liam coming in, but as we wrote the Wade scenes and we started thinking about that, it just occurred to us, ‘You know who would be great at this?’ It was completely different from the way he is described, but we called him and he said he already had a job and we suggested he should quit that job and take this job, and so here we are celebrating,” he added.

I’m glad Cunningham took the role. Wade in the books doesn’t actually show up till Book 3. Whereas in the show the character has been merged with a character from book 1. The boss of Dai Shi (Clarence), which as you can see Wade fulfils in the show. I actually think this was an extremely smart merging of characters. It allows us to follow Wade from Season 1 up until the point his character arrives in the books.

Have you watched 3 Body Problem yet? What did you think of Liam Cunningham’s casting as Wade? Are you glad showrunners Benioff and Weiss had to poach Cunningham from another job for 3 Body Problem? Thoughts below as always.
