According to the latest Barside Buzz around the show, Rings of Power Season 2 has a big battle that stretches across episodes. The information comes form the usually very reliable FoF and I have to say, this news comes as almost no surprise to me. If, you know the lore that they need to try and stick to, we are due to get the battle of Eregion in Season 2.

So, cool, I guess? However, massive battles might seem like a good idea on paper, but that is not always the case. Game of Thrones is a good example of overhyping a battle and making it too long, and also of getting it bang on right. Exhibit A being The Battle of the Bastards. An episode dedicated to an entire battle and it was phenomenal. However, the same tactic fell short of the mark for The Longest Night. Honestly, that episode was just not exciting enough whatsoever.

Any issues I had with Season 1 of Rings of Power were not down to the battles, though there weren’t many. Therefore, If I still don’t care for the show leading up to this battle, it won’t excite me to watch. I won’t know how I feel until we get to see Season 2 for ourselves, perhaps later this year.

The Battle of Eregion is an inevitable conclusion to the story of Season 2. That’s not leaks knowledge by the way, just books. If we follow the books, the story from the Elvish PoV has to go in this direction. The fall of Eregion is vital in that Rivendell is only created as a result of that fall. There are other factors, relating to some deaths, which I won’t get into here. My hope is that the writers realised after Season 1 that going off-piste with regards to Tolkien was a mistake and look to reign that in. My worry is that they will do no such thing and plots will deviate more and more.
