30 Rock Creators’Animated Comedy Series Mulligan For Netflix Has Potential For Serious Dramatic Stakes

Oh, hell yes. TV gurus Tina Fey and Robert Carlock are back. Of course, the two haven’t exactly been “apart.” Ever since 30 Rock hit the scene several years back, they’ve worked together on many different shows. Netflix’s uneven but occasionally great Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was their brainchild, and they even co-executive produced the NBC sitcom Great News. However, Mulligan will be their next collaboration with the streaming giant, and it comes to us in animated form.

THR reports that Mulligan has just received a 20-episode order from Netflix. As you’d expect from Fey and Carlock, this show is of the comedy persuasion. Though while the show itself is sure to be a fun, animated comedy, I’m sure it can handle some potentially-heavy material here.

Mulligan follows an Earth that has suffered from an alien attack. With humanity virtually being eradicated, they have a chance to start from scratch. While I have no idea what the tone and style of this show will be, I love it to have some actual dramatic weight. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt managed to have continuous character arcs and occasionally-brilliant insight, after all. My hope this is a comedy show that takes some narrative risks. Given its premise, it seems prime for that.

While Carlock and Fey are definitely the big names here, Sam Means (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), is also one of the co-creators alongside Fey. While this is going to be a series for Netflix, Fey and Carlock are continuing their relationship with NBCUniversal, with this being a Universal Television joint.

Mulligan joins an increasingly-rich animated ecosystem over at Netflix. From its anime and anime-inspired fare to its kids’ programming and adult animation, Mulligan will likely fit in quite nicely.
