Fans were devastated at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, as our new friend Groot, sacrificed himself for the rest of the crew. When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out last year, Groot was back. At least, that’s what we thought until James Gunn let us know it was actually Groot’s son. Groot Jr. is growing up fast, having already reached his angst-fueled teenage years in Avengers: Infinity War.

Now, an actual bonafide man of science, botanist James Wong has weighed in on the subject with a series of tweets. You can check out the posts right under the RELATED section below.

What I take away from these posts is that little Groot is as much big Groot as Boba Fett is Jango Fett. Much more of a natural clone than a son, unless the unlikely situation mentioned by Wong about little Groot having a mother turns out to be true. I really like what Gunn, the Russo brothers, and Marvel in general, have done with Groot, or as his friends call him, Tree. I also like the possibility of little Groot retaining Big Groot’s memories. I always like when experts break down aspects of movies in this way, I usually find the posts entertaining and informative.
