Nintendo fans have become spoiled. The video game dev has long established itself as a company that communicates directly with its consumers. Rather than rely on tradeshows to make big announcements, they have taken to YouTube and social media to share most of their big projects coming up in the form of Nintendo Directs, and it’s gotten to the point where fans expect a new Direct every few months.

Given that we tend to know very little about upcoming games at the start of each new year, we have also come to expect early Directs at the beginning of each year. In a move that has surprised fans, Nintendo revealed this morning that we’d be getting not just any normal Direct this Thursday, but a Pokémon Direct.

So, what does this mean? What can they possibly have to share now that Pokémon Sword & Shield have been released?

It’s the understatement of 2019 to say that Pokémon Sword & Shield were controversial entries in the canon of video games. Between the slimming down of the Pokédex and the lack of graphical prowess it had, fans weren’t wanting for things to complain about. Personally, it just felt too much like the games we’ve been playing for decades, and with this being the first home console experience, I was expecting more.

So, what can this Direct mean? Well, Nintendo, Game Freak, and the Pokémon Company have all been very silent on the whole controversy. While many can see that as them ignoring the problem, I’d like to think they’ve been silently working to address it, and that this Direct can be in response to all the negative things fans have been expressing. At least, that’s my own bit of speculation.

If nothing else, I don’t think it’s crazy to expect either special event announcements, DLC for Sword & Shield, and perhaps even news regarding the other Pokémon games that have been released in the past year.
