Carrie Fisher Was Originally Going To Be ‘The Last Jedi’ In Episode IX, Billie Lourd Played Young Leia

After Carrie Fisher passed away, Lucasfilm did the classy thing and promised that they wouldn’t CG her performance in an upcoming movie. It seemed like the classy thing to do at the time, and while it did ultimately make things more difficult for them, it was still a dirty, filthy lie. As viewers noticed, there was a sequence where we saw a young CG’d Princess Leia taking on Luke in a fight.

But before you get up in arms over them CG’ing young Leia, keep in mind that they seemed pretty clear about their overall desire to retain Carrie Fisher’s actual performance and that young Leia (as seen in Rogue One) wasn’t off the table.

But even in portraying a young Leia, Lucasfilm was great in how they handled it. For the short sequence, Billie Lourd acted as Leia before CG artists came in and put Fisher’s younger face over hers. It may be a small thing, but it does show how much they care.

In other interesting news, while speaking to Yahoo! Entertainment, Fisher’s brother Todd Fisher made an interesting reveal as to what the plans were for Leia in the final film before Carrie’s passing.

“She was going to be the big payoff in this final film. That is what the intent was, prior to her exiting. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak…”

Makes you wonder just differently the film would have been had Fisher still been alive. I was personally surprised and impressed when Lucasfilm opted to leave The Last Jedi intact, going for the riskier move of keeping Leia alive for the sake of that story. While I’m not thrilled with how it turned out for The Rise of Skywalker, I still appreciate what it did for that previous film.
