Agents of SHIELD Was Given Permission To Use MODOK – Only To Have It Retracted

One wonders what the future could hold for the MODOK character in the MCU? Turns out Agents of SHIELD was given permission to use MODOK. Then, after planning to use the classic Marvel villain, the permission was rescinded. This forced the team making AOS to have to pivot in another direction. The question remains, why?

The A.V. Club recently talked with AOS showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, along with executive producer Jeffrey Bell. Most of the discussion was around events that took place in the recent final Season finale. Though, here is what Bell said when talk turned to crazy ideas for the show that never happened.

“We had a lot of ideas where we were—and I’ll say this, I don’t care—we were given the green light originally to use certain characters from Marvel, and started to break story based on those characters—[Coughs.] MODOK—and then they retracted it. So there were a bunch of things that were going to get a little bat-shit crazy that were above our pay grade, in terms of the toys we were allowed to play with.”

A lot of outlets have run with this story. But have said that MODOK was pulled from the final Season. Therefore this story must mean a recent decision to use him elsewhere. That’s reaching.

Bell was talking in context of the whole show. If I was to guess, and it would just be a guess, I’d say MODOK was going to be used around Season 4 or Season 5. I have no evidence to back that up though, so it’s about as solid as any report you’ll read that says he was cut from Season 7. Looking at the story beats, I kinda feel like the head in a jar AI gangster Aida created, could have been going in a MODOK direction? But just a guess as I said.

It sound as though Bell was annoyed at having MODOK pulled when he was. Of course, if I am right and this was closer to Season 4, that’s also kind of when the connections to the MCU proper started to dissipate. Since Season 4, AOS has started to feel more and more like it was happening in a different universe. Perhaps this was most obvious in the Season finale when it appears like the team are in a modern day setting where the Thanos snap has not occurred.

So could this news just be a case of Marvel Studios just giving AOS less and less to work with? The quote from Bell isn’t therefore necessarily evidence that MODOK is imminently due in the MCU. Though, that’s not to say he won’t show up either?

What do you think of the news Agents of SHIELD was given permission to use MODOK, only to have it later retracted? Are you sad that AOS has ended? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot below.
