According to a newly, possibly leaked press release, Ahsoka will have a master and apprentice theme to the show. In the instance of this series, Ahsoka is the master and Sabine Wren the apprentice. Certainly in Rebels, the show which Ahsoka acts as a sequel to, Sabine was trained by Kanan to use the Darksaber. However, it so far has not been established that Wren is in any way Force Sensitive. I think therefore, fans never truly considered it as Sabine apprenticing with Kanan as such.
The information provided in the press release (linked here on Reddit) does not state that Wren is Force Sensitive. However, I guess for now we cannot rule that possibility out. Equally, it is possible this relationship works similarly without Wren being capable of training to be a Jedi. The trailers certainly show that Sabine goes with Ahsoka and is a part of this journey. Sabine will also see Lightsaber combat, using Ezra’s old blade.
It would probably also be accurate to say that Ezra sort of became Ashoka’s protege after his own Master (Kanan) was killed in Rebels. However, let’s see what was in the presser itself about this master and apprentice theme.
Ahsoka Press Release
‘With Ahsoka stepping into the role of master and taking on Sabine as her apprentice, the series delves into the impact the past has had on her. “There is a deep-seated fear that we start to explore with Ahsoka that has never left her about watching this person who she loved and considered family turn to the Darkside,” Dawson elaborates. “So, is she going to step to that sort of master level where it’s not just being a master on her own, but being a master who is going to pass on that richness of experience to a Padawan.”
“When I first met with Jon and Dave, Dave was saying this show is about the relationship between master and apprentice, and I was like, ‘well I hope I’m the apprentice because I don’t feel like I’ve mastered much.'” Natasha Liu Bordisso laughs. “One thing I love about Sabine’s journey is that she struggles with her emotions, she’s impulsive. She’s got good intentions but so many unfair things are happening around her and to her and she doesn’t always make the right decisions.”

Executive producer Jon Favreau adds, “The idea of apprenticeship, that’s what the whole show is about, and that’s what Ahsoka is wrestling with as she’s dealing with Sabine. That inherent need to come together to pass down knowledge and to help save the Galaxy.”
Reflecting on Ahsoka’s story thus far, Filoni explains, “She’s not perfect, she’s flawed. She had a lot to learn. Now she’s an adult, but her past gives us a look into her behavior and why she is the way she is. It has been a long road evolving her from Anakin’s young Padawan. She has grown form there into quite a special character in her own right.”
It is not clear exactly what kind of apprentice we are talking about with Sabine. Some fans are against Sabine being Force Sensitive. Their argument is they think it should have showed in Sabine earlier. However, remember that not all Force users are as powerful as others. Equally, most o those we have seen on screen developed as adults. Leia had no kind of Force awakening until she was an adult. I doubt many others had her raw potential as Anakin’s daughter. Luke equally with Leia was an adult, though a few years younger than Leia because of Obi-Wan. Rey was also an adult, and Finn was even later than Rey, though you’d guess nowhere near as strong.
For me, as long as it’s a good story and the relationship works well, I’ll be happy. I’m not bothered whether it’s with, or without Force abilities. However, I guess the quality remains to be seen for now.
