I’ve said time and again that I’m a huge sucker for these Disney live-action movies. I may complain when I see the trailers that they’re doing nothing to set themselves apart from the source material, but I’ve enjoyed pretty much every one I’ve seen regardless, and the recently-released Aladdin adaptation wasn’t an exception. Like Beauty and the Beast before it, in addition to skewing close to its animated counterpart, it also added a little bit of extra character and world-building.

One way they did this in Aladdin was through the fleshing out of Jasmine’s arc. In the original film, she does express her desire to go beyond the castle walls, and she does prove to be incredibly picky with her suitors, but she isn’t really given a full-on arc. That is fixed in the adaptation, which sees her vying for the Sultan role.

But, her entire life, she’s been told she should be seen, not heard, and in one of the key moments of the film, we get a powerful moment that sees her actually taking a stand. It’s a great moment, and it’s highlighted by actress Naomi Scott’s fantastic singing abilities, which can be seen above.
