Okay, we’ll admit, today’s been a little bit out of control with all the Alien: Covenant coverage. It’s a big film that fans are hoping will be the Alien prequel we’ve all been hoping for, and we have to say, we’re kind of feeling the same way. Coming off the momentum of Scott’s latest film, The Martian, this may very well be the best time for him to hop back onto the Alien train and complete the mythology he started back in 1979.
Up until last night, we had a few photos, a short teaser, and a prologue video — which is quite a bit, given the film isn’t due until this May. Regardless, the studio went ahead and dropped a new trailer anyway, and we have to say, it is all sorts of fantastic. The first part of the trailer does a great job of laying out the characters, their mission, and their relationship with one another (in a general sense, of course). From there, they land on a mysterious planet, and upon doing so, a dark mystery begins to unfold; a mystery that will eventually lead to the terrifying Xenomorphs tearing apart the majority of the crew.
If there’s one potential disappointment on the horizon for this film, it’s that it seems like a retread. Every Alien movie feels the same. Crew lands on planet that is mysterious for one reason or another. Crew somehow gets infected with a parasite that begins to tear apart the crew from the inside. It definitely works in delivering the scares, but should we get another film, I’d like for Scott to venture into different territory.
However, regardless of any problems we may have with the franchise’s repetitive nature, we know we’ll be at the theater day one to see how it all turns out — which will likely be bad for the crew in the Covenant.
The synopsis for Alien: Covenant is below:
The path to paradise begins in hell.
“Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.”
