Alex Garland is one of those rare talents in Hollywood. A few years back, he put out the contemplative sci-fi film, Ex Machina, and for his next film, he will be sending Natalie Portman into the Shimmer in Annihilation.
What is the Shimmer, you ask? Well, what perfect timing, because Paramount pictures has just put out a new featurette for the film, and in it, we actually have a chance to see what the film is kind of about. While those previous trailers were visually stunning, it wasn’t quite clear what’s going on.
This featurette clarifies the idea of the Shimmer.
“The Shimmer is a sort of phenomenon,” says star Natalie Portman. “They don’t what’s happened to all of the people who have gone in and haven’t come back.”
“It is moving so quickly, and soon it’s going to be devouring cities and things, and they just don’t have any idea what it is,” co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh states.
While those trailers had a great sense of foreboding, this featurette really does drive the point home that this colorful mass is something to be feared, and I personally can’t wait to see what kind of dangers they find within.
Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later).
