Antonio Banderas Joins Mark Wahlberg And Tom Holland For Uncharted Film

Antonio Banderas Joins Indy 5 - Indiana Jones 5

Fresh off his Best Actor nomination at this year’s Academy Awards, Antonio Banderas is ready to return to the adventure genre. Banderas is joining the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game series Uncharted. Banderas will be teamed up with film stars Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland, as well as new cast members Sophia Ali (Truth Or Dare) and Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina). The film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the director’s chair for Venom back in 2018.

For those who aren’t gamers—which would place you in the minority in LRM’s readership— Uncharted follows Nathan Drake, a heroic adventurer who journeys across the globe uncovering hidden mysteries. Basically, he’s a modern-day Indiana Jones, minus the fedora.

The film adaptation for Uncharted is a project that has long been sitting in pre-production purgatory. The recent news of Wahlberg and Holland joining the project kicked this film into becoming a reality—and now a veteran like Banderas signed on is a definite plus.

The intense Spanish actor first hit Hollywood in the ’90s, with supporting roles in films like Interview With The Vampire and Philadelphia. He evolved quickly into a charismatic action hero with Desperado and The Mask Of Zorro, while also appealing to family audiences as the voice of Puss In Boots in Shrek. With numerous Golden Globe and Emmy nominations in his career, Banderas earned the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Pain And Glory. That same film earned Banderas his first-ever Oscar nomination earlier this year.

Approaching 60 years of age, Banderas has eased into the veteran role quite smoothly, trading in his weapons and death-defying leaps for centered, realistic, and emotionally-driven performances. It will be interesting to see what type of character he portrays in this potential blockbuster adventure flick.

Uncharted is slated to be released in theaters nationwide March 5, 2021.
