Armorer Brings A Realism In World War II Drama ‘REVEILLE’

In a bold move to bring authenticity to the upcoming World War II drama “REVEILLE,” renowned armorer Mike Burch has stirred attention in the film industry by incorporating live ammunition on set. Despite recent tragic events on the set of “RUST,” Burch assures that strict safety protocols and close supervision were implemented during the use of live ammo, ensuring a completely safe environment. Working alongside wardrobe advisors Brian McCallion and Samuel Niles, Burch aimed to enhance the realism of the film while prioritizing the well-being of the cast and crew.

“REVEILLE,” written and directed by Michael Akkerman, transports viewers to the year 1943, where an American squad finds themselves embroiled in a confrontation with German soldiers along Italy’s Winter Line. Amidst the chaos of artillery fire and battle, the Americans are faced with the challenge of abiding by the rules of war while protecting their wounded prisoners. Sheltered in a cave, the soldiers are forced to confront profound moral dilemmas that transcend nationalities and loyalties.

Burch explains, “Michael Akkerman and I extensively deliberated over whether to employ blank rounds or live ammunition to convey a heightened sense of realism. We acknowledged the valid concerns surrounding this decision. However, in the end, the actors provided their consent and were comfortable with the use of live ammunition for specific shots.” He further emphasized the meticulous safety measures taken on set, stating that after the director yelled “cut,” each actor was individually approached and instructed to remain still until the firearm was cleared by Burch, McCallion, and Niles. Despite the nerve-wracking nature of the process, the team worked seamlessly together, ensuring that firearms were cleared by at least three experts before the actors resumed their positions. Burch reiterated that safety was their utmost priority, and they meticulously adhered to fundamental firearm handling rules.
