Artemis Fowl’s First Trailer Has Hit, And Novel Fans Aren’t Too Happy

If Hollywood isn’t adapting comic books to the silver screen, they are adapting novels to the big screen. Novels have been making their way to theaters since the dawn of the medium, but it wasn’t until more recently that they have consistently started adapting novels for children. The latest of those to hit the big screen will be Artemis Fowl, a film that’s been in the works for quite some time and comes courtesy of director Kenneth Branagh.

“Eoin Colfer created a landmark series of books and a totally original world of characters,” Branagh said in a statement. “We hope that fans familiar with this charismatic anti-hero, will also join a first-time cinema audience in enjoying a sea of surprises – cunning twists and turns in a typical Artemis Fowl style. His Irish adventures are breathless, exhilarating, energized escapades on a truly global scale. Inspired by his legendary cheekiness and wit, we’ve been  privileged to introduce the myth from the page and hopefully create a new hero for the big screen. It’s been a real joy to be on that ride.”

“Disney and Kenneth Branagh have magically found a way to extract my imagination, mixed in a dollop of Disney magic and projected the enchanted concoction onto the silver screen. I am very excited for audiences to see the film,” author Eoin Colfer said in a statement.

So, is this what fans have been looking for? Well, I can only say that the comments aren’t exactly glowing. Many are complaining that the Artemis Fowl in the story doesn’t resemble the one on the written page in terms of his personality. While he is cold and calculating in the books, here the character looks…more average. Additionally, there are a lot of comparisons being drawn to the Percy Jackson series, which is NOT a good thing, as those movies famously did not do amazingly.

While I can’t speak personally, as I haven’t read the books, the biggest complaint here is that the film seems to be taking tremendous liberties with the source material. While I can’t say I fully dislike what I saw in the trailer, I can see the Disney sheen all over this one. More than anything, it feels like a lot of the generic kids’ fantasy movies we got on the heels of Harry Potter, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.
