Jim Lee Snuffs Out Crazy DC Rumors

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for DC ever since they sent shock waves through the pop culture world when they suddenly let go former publisher Dan DiDio. Since then there have been some sites seemingly trying to get ahead of any official announcement and post articles with a variety of rumors about the future of DC. Some of them are easy to dismiss even by just reading the title. For example, my favorite one is that AT&T was interested in selling DC to Marvel.

Luckily for everyone, C2E2 was this past weekend and DC’s now sole publisher and chief creative officer, Jim Lee, had a personal spotlight panel where he cleared up a lot of these rumors that are floating around the internet. Via Newsarama we have some of the information that Lee told all those in attendance. The first thing he cleared up was the idea that DiDio was going to be replaced.

“There’s continually new things going on, and I look at being sole publisher now and the team I’m working with. Much more in trenches now than ever before,” said Lee. So, for now, it would seem that Lee is going to have a lot more work as there will not be a replacement for DiDio.

Then he addressed DC’s status with Warner Bros., and how some people have claimed that they don’t see the value in some of the properties, specifically the comic books.

“We’ve been with Warner Bros. for decades,” Lee elaborated. “The actual strategy for DC is to put publishing at the center of what we do. It’s the engine of all the movies, TV, cartoons, we do. And so it’s my intent going forward as the Publisher, to lean into the collective years of my team.” Sure I can see Warner Bros. trying something different to repackage and promote the DC characters, but unless there is something catastrophic going on in the background. I highly doubt they would ever get rid of the publishing company that includes Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

This leads us to one of the wildest rumors that I mentioned above. Could Marvel be working towards acquiring DC publishing? Of course not.

“To address some of the stuff that is out there, there’s rumors… speculation,” Lee explained. “I wouldn’t put any credence into it. DC has been around for 85 years, and we’ll be around for another 85 years. I hope to be doing this panel in 85 years.” There are a group of characters that have been around for over 80 years and have always been DC and I believe will continue to be DC.

One of the last rumors that he talked about was that the 5G initiative would bring forth yet another reboot.

“It’s hard to talk about things we haven’t announced. Intention not to do a line-wide reboot,” Lee clarified. “Our focus in talking to the editorial team is to continue what we’ve done best: Character-driven stories, pairing right creators on right characters, and developing characters that are inclusive and diverse.” I don’t believe that DC’s current state of comics demands a reboot. When they rebooted with Rebirth, there was a huge disconnect between books. Right now I feel like although I am not a fan of the direction they have taken some characters specifically Superman, It’s not the time to hit a reset button.

When there is a major change in a publishing company like DC, it’s easy and even entertaining to speculate what will happen next. For now, I trust that Lee will have a good handle on DC. With many conventions in the near future, DC will reveal plans to us little by little. Specifically, I expect a good amount of information at this year’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California, which is in DC’s backyard.
