I’ve been worried for a while that we haven’t heard His Dark Materials is renewed for Season 3. Season 1 was brilliant for me as a fan of the books. Luckily, we already know Season 2 has the green light. Season 2 will cover the second book in the trilogy, called ‘The Subtle Knife’. My worry was, what if Season 2 of His Dark Materials doesn’t get enoughviewers? Could the show get cancelled before the final book can be adapted, and we are left with an incomplete story again?
This fate for His Dark Materials is one I have experienced before. When The Golden Compass movie flopped at the box office, it meant no sequels. Not being allowed to finish this story is therefore definitely a concern of mine. I think, this concern is one shared by the production team and cast as well. However, there may be light at the end of this tunnel after all, if we keep our fingers crossed.
His Dark Materials showrunner Jack Thorne has responded to a tweet from Jane Tranter. Tranter is one of the BBC executives producing His Dark Materials. Tranter explains to fans that the scripting process for book three i.e. ‘The Amber Spyglasss’ is about to get underway. Thorne then posts a picture of the novel and says he is currently loving the battle with this incredible book. Check it out below.

Would Thorne and his team really be scripting Season 3, if they did not have the go ahead? Maybe it is expedient to begin the writing process in order that they are not caught on the hop when a decision is given? However, would they then be so public about beginning the scripting process?
Another detail to take into consideration is that of a Season 4. The showrunner and everyone else working on His Dark Materials have been vocal in the past about wanting that final book split into a Season 3 and 4. Honestly, I’m not sure the book could be done in one season, without stripping it to the bare bones. Is it then possible that His Dark Materials has the green light for Season 3, and 4?
Those are the facts, for the answers between the lines, you’ll have to use your own judgement. For me, I’d say things are looking favourable that His Dark Materials is renewed for Season 3. If it is, then I find it highly likely that Season 4 has been given the go ahead as well. Let us know what you think in the usual spot below.
