Solo: A Star Wars Story had one of the more troubled productions in recent memory. Considering the obstacles the film faced, I’d say it turned out much better than expected. Sure, it wasn’t great. And while it was fairly predictable it was still a fun movie for the most part.
As anyone who has seen the film knows an old friend of the Star Wars universe made a brief cameo. The former apprentice of Emperor Palpatine, known now as Maul appeared via hologram and was revealed to be the head of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.
According to Sam Witwer, who has provided the voice for Maul in the Star Wars animated shows. The cameo seen in the film was not the original but the result of a reshoot to correct inconsistencies in Maul’s character. You can check out what Witwer had to say while speaking with Star Wars Holocron below.
“There was a reshoot that had to happen because people like me and Dave Filoni were letting them know there were a lot of details that weren’t consistent. That’s not me saying these people didn’t know what they were doing because they were making a movie and doing it at lightspeed.”

More from Witwer:
“Ultimately, they did the right thing because they hired the people who were the experts on this like Dave Filoni and, I dare say, me, because I’m kind of an expert on what we’ve been doing with Maul for the past decade, y’know?”
To some fans, Maul’s Solo: A Star Wars Story cameo felt forced (pun absolutely intended). While I will admit the cameo initially felt out-of-place. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of Maul rising to the top of a criminal organization.
For me, the worst part of the cameo was his appearance, he just didn’t look right. How can I put this, he looked like the Great Value version of Maul. All things considered, Maul’s cameo was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
