There was that brief moment in time a few years back when I thought mid-budget movies could be making a comeback. Of course, blockbusters would still own the theater, but mid-budget action flicks could very well be making a comeback. John Wick seemed to usher in that hefty dose of optimism and it was hammered home by the Charlize Theron-starring Atomic Blonde. Both featured high-octane fight sequences and both featured the directorial stylings of former stunt performers.

Atomic Blonde went on to take in $100 million at the worldwide box office. Admittedly, it’s not an amazing performance. When all said and done, it certainly made a profit, but it wasn’t exactly a cash cow type of property. Plus, in the time since then, mid-budgets have started moving over to streaming services in droves, with Netflix being the go-to place for many of them. 

With that in mind, it’s not surprising what we’re hearing. According to Discussing Film, and Atomic Blonde sequel is in early development at Netflix. Charlize Theron will be producing and returning as Lorrain Broughton. As of this writing, there is no screenwriter attached to the project, but as the deal finalizes, it’ll only be a matter of time.

It is unknown if 87Eleven, the production company that produced the first movie, will be involved. However, given that they have a current working relationship with Netflix, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility. We do know that the original producer, Kelly McCormick is likely to be involved. 

Personally, I think Netflix is a great fit for the property. As fun as the movie was on the big screen, it didn’t exactly need a big screen to be enjoyed. In fact, it’s very much the type of movie I would have preferred to watch on HBO months later. With it going to Netflix, it’s essentially cutting out the middle man, which is a smart move.
