I think a lot of us were surprised to see Fat Thor show up in Avengers: Endgame. And, if I’m being honest, I was surprised that he stuck around for the entirety of the movie. Once he was back on board with the mission, I assumed they’d find some ridiculous way to justify him getting back to normal fit size. Instead, they followed through with his weight for the duration of the film. Even as he rode off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, he still remained a plus-sized Thor.
So, I can’t help but wonder whether or not we’ll be seeing more of him in the movies to come. As of right now, we know little about where the story is headed and even less about the time frame of each of the movies. So, for all we know, these upcoming movies could take place months or years after Avengers: Endgame, giving Thor plenty of time to get fit. In fact, if we’re to believe Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, we may have already seen the last of him.
“We haven’t figured that out, but I feel like that’s done,” Waititi told Instagram viewers during a watch party for Thor: Ragnarok. My initial thought it one of mild shock, but then I remembered just where the other Thor-centric movies stand. Thor: Ragnarok isn’t due out until 2022 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn’t even have a place on the slate just yet.

As such, they won’t need to have Fat Thor figured out until production starts. That being said, we do know that Taika Waititi already has at least a draft of Thor: Love and Thunder done. You’d think they’d at least have that be some sort of plot point or mention in it, right?
Who knows? All I know is that Marvel Studios has never been obsessive about those types of details matching up perfectly. Sometimes, there are some major gaps between movies and we learn to live with them as fans. But, personally, I think Fat Thor served a great purpose in terms of character development, and seeing him rise up to reclaim his lifestyle would have been rewarding to see.
