AT&T Projects They’ll Have 50 Million HBO Max Subscribers By 2025

As two of the giant corporations on the planet–Apple and Disney–prepare to set foot into the “streaming wars” this November. AT&T has already begun touting the impact its future services will make. The telecom giant stated that WarnerMedia’s upcoming HBO Max service will hit 50 million subscribers by the year 2025. In an analyst call, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson made it clear the company’s projections. “This is going to be a meaningful business for us over the next four or five years and we’re talking a 50 million subscriber business and we’re really enthusiastic about this,” he said.

On Tuesday, during WarnerMedia’s special investor day, WarnerMedia unveiled that the service will go live in May 2020. In its first year, HBO Max will offer over 10,000 hours of content in 31 original titles dedicated to the service. By the following year, the service plans to hit 50 titles, while contemplating the current 38 original titles viewed through the regular HBO service.

Joining WarnerMedia’s HBO Max next summer in competing the current billion-dollar leader Netflix is Comcast’s NBCUniversal Peacock. Citing the company’s focus on its existing pay-TV ecosystem, Comcast’s 55 million customer relationships, and an advertising VOD model, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke states “we are going to get to cruising altitude much more quickly than a subscription service.” In regards to the two competitors going live this year, Disney is projecting between 60 million and 90 million global streaming subscribers by 2024. That number is more than the 28 million U.S. members that Hulu has. Additionally, AppleTV+ is being forecast to become a $9 billion-a-year business with 136 million paid subscribers by 2025.
