Ava DuVernay Is Adapting DC’s DMZ Into An HBO Max Series

2019 was a big year for filmmaker Ava DuVernay. Her Netflix Limited series When They See Us garnered both critical and mainstream praise for its emotional depiction of the trials and tribulations of the then Central Park Five—now Exonerated Five. On top of that, DuVernay has teamed up with DC’s current top writer Tom King for a film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s comic series The New Gods.

Now, it’s being reported that DuVernay has set her exquisitely creative eyes on another DC title. The writer/director/producer will be working alongside Westworld executive producer Roberto Patino in handling a television adaptation of DMZ for HBO Max. A pilot has been ordered by the streaming platform.

Reported Tuesday morning by The Hollywood Reporter, the news outlet details the comic series below:

Based on the critically hailed Brian Wood-Riccardo Burchielli comic, DMZ is set in a near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war. The island of Manhattan has become a demilitarized zone separating the two sides, largely destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world.

This adaptation will follow a female medic searching for her son in the middle of this second Civil War. Along the way, she saves lives effected by the gangs, militias, and warlords controlling the island of Manhattan. The pilot is set to begin production in early 2020. No announcements have been made yet regarding the cast.

With a résumé that includes Selma, 13th, Queen Sugar, Scandal, and the aforementioned When They See Us, DuVernay has proven herself as a revolutionary filmmaker. On paper and through the lens, her storytelling contains raw—sometimes heartbreaking—emotion from characters mainstream audiences are not common with. Her incomparable style is evidence of the power of filmmaking, and her talent is exactly what these DC adaptations are in need of. As a fan of dramatic adaptations of comic book titles, this writer is highly excited to see DuVernay at the helm.
