Avatar 2 Filming Is Complete And Avatar 3 Almost Finished Says James Cameron

An update from filmmamker James Cameron says Avatar 2 filming is complete and Avatar 3 almost finished. The Avatar movies are being shot back to back and like every other production, the sequels had to deal with COVID-19 delays. The filmmaker spoke with old colleague Arnold Schwarzenegger in a video call ahead of the 2020 Austrian World Summit environmental conference. We got the details of this call via The Independent and here is what Cameron had to say.

“COVID hit us like it hit everybody. We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.”

“So where we are right now,” Cameron continued. “I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live action. We’ve got about 10 per cent left to go. We’re 100 per cent complete on Avatar 2, and we’re sort of 95 per cent complete on Avatar 3.”

So Avatar 2 is finished and the Avatar 3 is around 95% complete. Of course, in a movie like Avatar, there is a massive amount of post-production time after filming. Those phenomenal visual effects don’t just happen on their own. Therefore, with Avatar 2 currently slated for a December 2022 release, it should hopefully give Cameron enough time to get it ready for theaters.

With such a long time between Avatar and its upcoming sequels, one does wonder whether audiences will have the same positive reactions? Avatar was the biggest movie of all time until Avengers: Endgame took the crown. Will Avatar 2 have a real chance to dethrone Endgame? Avatar 2 and 3 are definitely hitting theaters. However, if both movies are successful, Cameron then plans to make Avatar 4 and 5 back to back afterwards. At this  current pace it could be late into the ’20’s before we see Avatar 4 see the light of day. That’s if they even get the green light? Though, I have to believe Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 would have to bomb hard for Avatar 4 to not get the go ahead from Disney.

What do you make of this news that Avatar 2 filming is complete and Avatar 3 almost finished? Leave your thoughts below as always.
