The biggest movie of all time’s (again) sequel gets a title at last. Avatar: The Way of Water is the official title of Avatar 2 and a teaser trailer was shown to audiences at CinemaCon yesterday. Of course, that footage is not yet available online anywhere. However we do have a few details about the movie from the accompanying Disney press release. The footage was shown to the crowds in 3D, which of course was one of the main selling points of Avatar. Since Avatar conquered the world 3D has come, and gone again in a short space of time.
Remember when every movie was releasing in both 2D and 3D at theatres? don’t see that too much now do we? However when it comes to 3D the majority of movies were converted in post. Avatar on the other hand was designed as a 3D movie from the outset. That’s part of what made Avatar a theatre experience you had to have. Over time, I would say the movie itself has become less popular. Frankly because it wasn’t all that, outside of the 3D. Here is the official content from the press release.
Disney Press Release For Avatar: The Way Of Water
The title of the “Avatar” sequel, which will open in theaters December 16, is “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet. To whet audiences’ appetites, the studio will re-release “Avatar” in theaters on September 23.
The teaser trailer, which was screened in 3D for the very first time today and drew highly enthusiastic responses from the CinemaCon audience, will debut exclusively in theaters with Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” on May 6.

It remains to be seen whether Avatar: The Way of Water will find the same sort of pop culture success as the first movie did. The novelty factor of 3D may well work for this one again. However I can’t be alone in hoping the story is just a little bit better this time around if Avatar is to spawn up to another 3 movies after this.
As for the title, I gotta say I’m not keen. However, maybe once I see the movie I will change my mind? We already know the majority of this second film is set in and underneath the oceans of Pandora. What do you think of the title Avatar: The Way of Water? Are you excited to see the teaser trailer when it’s finally released alongside Multiverse of Madness. Or, did you attend CinemaCon and want to tell us what you thought? Thoughts below as always.
