Avengers 4 Co-Director Thinks The Era Of The Two-Hour Film Is Coming To An End

Films are roughly around two hours long. Of course, it’s never been a tried-and-true statement. Since practically the beginning, we’ve seen plenty of bloated three-hour experiences hit the cinemas. But, by and large, it’s generally accepted that your typical film will clock in at around two hours in length, with the exceptions, of course, being the mammoth tentpole films.

However, with the sheer number of big tentpole films increasing, it does seem like the box office is getting jam-packed with a lot more two-and-a-half hour experiences than ever before. But what does this mean? Does it mean movies will just continue to get longer and longer? Avengers 4 co-director Joe Russo seems to have a much more extreme theory regarding the typical film format:

“The two-hour film has had a great run over 100 years, but it’s become very difficult to work in. … I’m not sure that the generation that’s coming up will see the two-hour film as the dominant form of storytelling.”

The director went on to tell Deadline that part of the weaknesses is the lack of surprise, with kids being able to guess the ending in its first five minutes or so. So what is he saying here? Is he saying TV is the true way of the future, as its longer running time allows for many more twists and turns, along with overall change? Or perhaps it has more to do with the typical three-act structure?

His and Anthony Russo’s production company, AGBO, seems set on experimenting with different formats, in search of the next big thing, it seems. And in regards to some studios being slavish to the typical feature format, he compares it to executives saying, “Hey, we all love sonnets. Let’s just write sonnets for 100 years.”

Honestly, as someone who is heavily steeped in the world of features, I can’t even comprehend a film front where features aren’t the typical thing, but I guess that’s what makes the future so exciting. The sky’s the limit.
