Avengers: Endgame – How Smart Hulk Was Brought To Life

Despite some headlines you may have already seen, no, Mark Ruffalo did NOT say Hulk was in Brave New World.

The glorious spectacle that was Avengers: Endgame brought with it many surprises including mirror matches, unusual family reunions and Thor, who was in a dark place this time, instead of a Dark World.

One of the more fun surprises in Avengers: Endgame is that of the not-so-dumb Hulk. Professor Hulk, Smart Hulk, by any name what we received was the best of both Hulk worlds. The CGI work was done by Framestore, and not surprisingly, according to the company Hulk’s face was the most difficult aspect of bringing the new version of the Hulk to life. You can check out what VFX supervisor Stuart Penn had to say.

‘There was a lot of work involved as their face shapes are so different – Hulk is massive, his mouth proportionally bigger, his eyes are sunken with deeper sockets. Tiny changes to his face had a huge effect on the performance. ’A new subset of facial shapes was built to enable the animators to achieve more complex and nuanced expression and give them more control in the animation.”

Framestore did a great job, blending of the two personalities was as close to perfect as could be expected. It was nice to see Hulk contributing something to the Avengers besides smashing things. Just one of many pleasantries Avengers: Endgame used to delight moviegoers.
